The Federation of European Accountants (Fédération des Experts comptables Européens – FEE) believes the accountancy profession can, by sharing its expertise and experience, help public sector organisations to achieve greater sustainability in their activities and actions.

According to the recently issued FEE report the public sector is key to raising sustainability awareness.

The FEE explained public sector expenditure in the EU represents more than 40 percent of European gross domestic product and public sector organisations have a vital part to play in addressing sustainable development within their organisations but also by setting an example for the market as a whole.

However, the European institute explained the public sector must measure its efforts to address the issue by using financial and non-financial performance indicators in combination and not isolation.

In January 2010 FEE will publish a policy statement on the public sector and sustainability, Accountants driving sustainability changes in the public sector, which comes after a round table debate held in July 2009, Accounting, Sustainability and the Public Sector – policy and accountability, a route map.
